If you’re concerned about the holiday season potentially ruining your progress and pushing you off the wagon, I’m here to help with things NOT to do this Thanksgiving (as well as tips you can follow instead).
❌ Don’t starve yourself before the Thanksgiving meal.
This creates a restrict and binge cycle – if you go into the meal super hungry, you’re going to be more likely to eat quickly and not notice that you’re full until it’s too late.
✅ Instead, do eat a light breakfast consisting of quality protein and vegetables to help hold you over until the main meal.
❌ Don’t overfill your plate.
Many of us struggle with a finish-your-plate mentality, so when we load our plates up with more than we can handle we find that we struggle to stop eating when we are comfortably full.
✅ Instead, start with smaller portions so you can try a little bit of everything. After you finish a plate of food, take a pause and drink some water to assess your fullness. If you’re still hungry, go back for more!
❌ Don’t rush through the meal.
It takes 20 minutes for the signals from our stomach to reach our brain. When we eat quickly, we end up consuming food past our point of fullness before our brain has even registered that we are full.
✅ Instead, eat slowly and mindfully – pay attention to the taste and texture of your food and really take the time to enjoy it. This will not only help reduce the risk of over-eating but also increase your satiety at the end of the meal.
