Francis Chan
Workouts can be brutal but they’re always fun whenever Fran is around. He brings laughter and entertainment to every class. Notorious for showing up 5 minutes late to class but will always bring a light to class when he finally gets there. Fran is always willing to encourage other members to increase the intensity and to push harder.
We love having Fran as a part of our 858 family. He is definitely one of a kind.

Tony Sands
Being a new dad, we’re impressed by his continued dedication to his health and fitness. We love hearing when he reaches a streak on how many days he’s made it in, because it shows his pride in his commitment and hard work. He’s also going the extra mile by training with a mask knowing he will have to referee games with one on – another great example of how he goes the extra mile to challenge himself to be his absolute best self.
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
It all started back in January 2008, Crossfit Newport Beach. I had tried out for the reboot of American Gladiators and was looking to take my training to the next level. My friend told me about a fitness workout, the cast of Movie “300” had used to get fit. Sounded fun, so I researched it and found that Newport Beach had a Crossfit gym. It was less than 2-miles from my house.
What got you hooked on CrossFit?
It was fun and the intensity; getting my ass kicked everyday when I thought I was in decent shape to begin with in my late 20s. What has made me stay consistent, is the mental reset I get from working out. Along with the friendships throughout the years.
What is your favorite movement?
Anything MetCon, I like the mental challenge of long WODs too. Crossfit has taught me to love the uncomfortable. In my head, I know it will not last forever, so keep moving.
Do you have any current goals you are trying to attain?
Of course, I am goal oriented! Be the best dad & husband possible, be a CEO in the next 3-years and work a Bowl Game by 2023.
My Crossfit goals have reset after competing in the 2009 SoCal regionals [where] I finished 33 out of 77. Today, it’s about completing the workout and returning to the gym the next day.
Do you have any advice for someone starting out in CrossFit?
Go slow and be consistent (4-5 workouts a week), you will see results in 90 days. Then fine tune your nutrition and you will see even more results. Eating clean is a lifestyle and is 80% of the puzzle. The other 20% are your workouts.
