Jared Hunt

We have watched Jared grow and excel at CrossFit over the years as he consistently sets and achieves his goals. Jared is always happy to be in the gym with his fellow athletes and always smiling. His integrity, patience, discipline and grit is remarkable. He is an inspiration to his coaches and athletes alike with his relentless pursuits in and outside of the gym. Congrats, Jared!

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I have been doing crossfit since January 13th, 2017 (yep, I remember the exact date. That’s how big a deal it was to me).

What got you hooked on CrossFit?

I was first attracted to the difficulty of crossfit. I love going into the gym knowing that I’m going to be tested not only physically, but also mentally. When you’re in the middle of a tough workout and all you feel like doing is finding a nice little corner to go curl up in and die, it’s the perfect scenario to develop your grit and tenacity. What keeps me doing crossfit is hands down the community. The saying goes misery loves company, but from my experience, my misery at Crossfit 858 is never unbearable because I love the company.  (Shoutout to the 6 am crew at Miramar, miss you all.).

What is your favorite movement?

Burpees because I used to be terrible at them and now I’m mediocre.

Do you have any current goals you are trying to attain?

Since I broke my collar bone last August, I’ve struggled with pulling strength, so it’s my goal to do 20 unbroken strict pull ups by August of this year.

Do you have any advice for someone starting out in CrossFit?

You are forever a student. If you ever find yourself thinking you know everything, it’s time to take a step back and reassess your knowledge objectively. Most importantly though, have fun.

Fun Fact:

Mark Lin is actually my real father.

Analiese Hurd

Analiese has always gone out of her way to express appreciation for our efforts, and for that we are so humbled and grateful. Furthermore, she has used quarantine to take advantage of all the things we’ve had to offer between online classes and Mental WOD. She decided to laser-focus on her health and wellness and we’ve watched her over the last month experience immense growth as a person because of it. Thank you, Analiese, for your constant 858 support and hard work!

How long have you been doing CrossFit?

I started CrossFit in 2011 when a friend invited me to a class at (what was then) CrossFit Mission Gorge.

What got you hooked on CrossFit?

Definitely how strong I felt. I was pushing my body beyond what I thought it was capable of and it inspired a serious sense of accomplishment and pride. Which is what keeps me hooked 9 years later!

What is your favorite movement?

My absolute favorite movement is the deadlift, but after sustaining an injury a few years ago, I can’t do them as often, or as heavy, as I want to. So my second favorite would be hang power cleans.

Do you have any current goals you are trying to attain?

Thanks to the goal setting encouragement of our awesome coaches, I’m working toward being able to complete a strict pull up and building strength for handstands!

Do you have any advice for someone starting out in CrossFit?

Just the usual: show up, stick with it, and the PRs will come. But there’s nothing wrong with scaling a workout to fit the needs of your body on any given day. I actually think the beginning of my CrossFit career was the most exciting, because I saw such progress in my abilities. But results from the hard work you put in over time and perfecting movements keeps it fun.

Fun Fact:

I’m a huge dog lover (as in, spent my whole childhood wanting to be a vet) so I love that the CrossFit community is so dog friendly and some of my favorite dogs are the ones I get to see at the gym. And maybe they are some of my motivation to get to the early morning classes!
