M I R A M A R
Randy Frater
Randy has been a part of our 858 community for 8 years. He is dedicated and consistent with his training and recovery, and particularly enjoys attending our Saturday morning ATG Barbell Class to work on his Olympic Lifting technique. Randy not only puts in the hard work during class, but he always makes it a point to introduce himself to new faces and shows support at local competitions. Congrats Randy!
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
My eight year anniversary at 858 Miramar was last month.
What got you hooked on CrossFit?
My very first WOD was REALLY intimidating, except for three people. Mark introduced me to everyone at the beginning of the WOD, and Citrus and Alanna made me feel very, very welcome. I would have to say those three people were a huge influence in my decision. I’m still very grateful to them. And it’s only gotten better since. 858 is a very welcoming place and I’ve made a lot of friends here.
What is your favorite movement?
Squat snatch. It took me just over seven years to do my first squat snatch. I’m not consistent with it but working at something that long and then succeeding is awesome!!
Do you have any current goals you are trying to attain?
Officially, no, but I am trying to get my weight under control. It would be nice to see all those muscles I’ve built up but for now they’re covered with fat! A bit less wine perhaps??!!
Do you have any advice for someone starting out in CrossFit?
Yes, I would advise any newcomer, especially older ones like myself, to take the initiative and talk to the coach about scaling and keep talking about it. Most anyone can do most any move if they learn to scale properly.
Fun Fact:
I just started wearing hearing aids. Many, many hours driving tractors on the home farm in Minnesota took a toll on my hearing, but the hearing aids help a lot!! I really don’t mind growing old; I just don’t want to MOVE like I’m old. That’s why I do Crossfit.

Josh Read
Josh started at Mission Gorge, then went to Miramar for a bit, and now he’s back at Mission Gorge. In the last month he realized he needed to make a commitment to the mornings to improve his workout consistency, and since then he’s been a regular at the 6:30am class, despite how difficult he says it can be to wake up some mornings. He always shows up with a positive attitude and works his butt off on technique and in workouts. His commitment to consistency – even if it means early mornings – inspires us!
How long have you been doing CrossFit?
5 Months, but I’ve been going really consistently for about 1 month.
What got you hooked on CrossFit?
Feeling great every day, seeing improvement in myself, and having fun with coaches and other CrossFitters. And, of course, getting to hang out with Thor.
What is your favorite movement?
I love to do overhead squats.
Do you have any current goals you are trying to attain?
Long term goal: Be able to do gymnastics. Short term goal: Do a workout without scaling.
Do you have any advice for someone starting out in CrossFit?
Make it a part of your regular routine; go to classes at the same time every day. It will help you see the same people week to week which builds camaraderie. Also, going to the smaller classes is great, because you get more room to do your workout and more individual coaching.
Fun Fact:
I love classical music, and I sing operatic repertoire when I have time.
